Aoshima, Japan, is an active volcano located in the Pacific Ocean about 220 miles south of Tokyo. The island’s population of approximately 170 people, living within the crater of the larger volcano, is Japan’s smallest village. The volcano last erupted in 1785, killing half of the island’s population.
